- Cleaning removes allergens and microorganisms from surfaces only
- Sanitizing kills/reduces the number of bacteria present by 99.9%, but does nothing about viruses and fungus. Most of the wipes that you see perform this step.
- Disinfecting kills/reduces the number of bacteria, viruses, fungus present by 99.99%, a TEN-FOLD DECREASE in the number remaining. In a very vulnerable environment, such as a Hospital, it would require a 99.999% Kill percentage, which is VERY DIFFICULT AND COSTLY TO ACHIEVE. This is not needed for all norovirus, influenza, rhinovirus, coronavirus and all other common illnesses, which is what we encounter in our Home and Office environments.
Health Canada (HC) treats disinfectants differently from the American equivalent, the Food and Drug Authority (FDA). Manufacturers in the U.S. use specific viruses, bacteria, and fungi that their disinfectant can reduce/kill. A DIN number registered with Health Canada identifies that a disinfectant has a Broad Spectrum effect on bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Health Canada is starting to list specific products in their “Hard-surface disinfectants and hand sanitizers (COVID-19): List of hard-surface disinfectants ” list, but this is only for information purposes.
