Why is spring cleaning necessary?

When faced with the day-to-day pressures of running a business, a major task like spring cleaning may seem like an easy thing to put off. A clean workplace is vital for a number of reasons, including the impression left on visitors when they enter an unkempt office.

Here’s three reasons why spring cleaning is necessary, according to Staples:

1. Higher productivity & accuracy. Cleaning and organizing is crucial to help employees do their jobs more effectively. Reducing germs in the workplace keeps your team healthier — which is important when you consider that one survey found employees experience a 50 percent drop in productivity when working while sick.

2. Fewer injuries. Having a safe place for everything, including office equipment, storage items, etc., reduces the likelihood that employees, vendors and visitors will get hurt. Slips, trips and falls account for more than 9 million emergency room visits each year, according to the National Floor Safety Institute.

3. Lower absenteeism. Businesses lose 111 million workdays each year to the flu alone. “A clean environment helps promote better health,” says Marie Stegner, the consumer health advocate and blogger for Atlanta-based Maid Brigade, Inc. “Dirt, germs, dust buildup and poor indoor air quality all contribute to colds, the flu, viruses, asthma and allergic reactions.”

A clean office is in the best interest of the company’s overall success.

Top office spring cleaning tips

Don’t forget to clean inside your desk

"Most people throw things into a desk drawer to get them out of sight," Jane Brown, founder of organization and design firm Jane Brown Interiors, told Forbes. “After time, however, they have no idea what’s in that drawer and become anxious even opening it.” Brown suggests using drawer dividers to give everything a place, like compartments for paperclips and rubber bands. Then go through the drawer every six weeks and clear out anything that is out of place or isn't being used. And put this task on your calendar, Brown warns, so you that you keep the appointment.

Don’t overlook PC desktop

Another tip via Forbes: A screen cluttered with icons will trigger your stress hormone and make it impossible to find anything. Instead, create a logical digital filing system and reduce your desktop icons to a select few. By the same token, clear off any sticky notes or reminders from your monitor, as they will only distract you from your work.

Tie things up under your desk

An important safety reminder from Cubicle Bilss: “As part of the safety exercise we concentrated on the areas near the employee’s feet where there could be cords that could get tangled in your feet. We ended up tying up the cords that were in the feet area using nylon cable ties that you can see in a photo within this article. I know it may sound like a small thing but the Safety Committee at my workplace looks at any potential safety hazard, this particular one is a tripping hazard, and takes steps to prevent any mishaps from occurring.”

Be sure to tidy up loose wires on and under your desk.
