Waterloo Region’s largest janitorial living wage employer
December 12, 2018
For immediate release
Kitchener Clean became Waterloo Region’s largest janitorial living wage employer on Wednesday, December 5th, 2018.
The commercial cleaning service has joined 185 other organizations who are a part of Ontario’s Living Wage Network, a body of employers, employees, NGO’s, non-profits, researchers, and proponents of decent work standards across Ontario.
Defined by Ontario’s Living Wage Network, the living wage is the “hourly wage a worker requires in order to cover their basic expenses and participate in their community” (OLWN, 2018). Although not required from employers outside of the legislated minimum wage, the choice to provide a living wage sets a higher standard for provincial employers to consider the cost of living in their respective communities, including food, clothing, shelter, medical expenses, transportation and more. The current living wage in the Waterloo region is $16.15.
“Integrity is one of the core values of our Professional Office Cleaning company. We sincerely hope to improve the communities we service as well as the lives of our employees, which is why Kitchener Clean has decided to become a proud Living Wage Employer,” said Derrick Carroll and Tori Savage, partners at Kitchener Clean. “We wholeheartedly embrace the living wage philosophy and are thrilled to be partnering with the Ontario Living Wage Network in order to provide employment that will not only improve the well-being of our staff, but will also improve the overall health of the Canadian economy.”
The certification was made official in Kitchener through the signing of a declaration form and provision of a certificate on December 5, 2018.
